2006/2007 Tryout Information

Tryouts for the Varsity and JV cheerleading teams will be on MONDAY, APRIL 21 at 6:00pm in Fetzer Gym C. For more information on the program. See the General Information page.

Varsity Cheerleaders cheer at Football and Men's Basketball games.

Junior Varsity Cheerleaders cheer at Football and Women's Basketball games.

 

Cheer and Dance tryouts are typically held during the first week of school in Fetzer Gym C. Fetzer Gym is located on South Road across from the Student Union. Click here for directions.

Cheerleading tryouts will be held for Varsity Cheer, JV Cheer, Varsity Dance and JV Dance simultaneously. During tryouts, the coaches will determine each athlete's skill level, potential, leadership abilities, and crowd presence. Below are the minimum skills necessary for varsity-level cheerleading.

Skills:
Females

Standing Tumbling:
1) back-handspring
2) back tuck
3) back-handspring back tuck

Series Tumbling:
1) roundoff back-handspring back tuck
2) roundoff back-handspring back layout
3) roundoff back-handspring full*

Males

Standing Tumbling:
1) back-handspring
2) back tuck
3) back-handspring back tuck

Stunting:
1) hop-and-go extention
2) toss extention
3) lib
4) stretch

*not required at tryouts, but reccommended

Tryout Rules and Regulations:

1. Eligibility

A) All athletes trying out for the Cheer or Dance teams must be full time students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For admissions criteria, please contact the admissions office.

B) Cheerleaders must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

C) Cheerleaders must remain in good academic standing with the University and have good conduct in and out of the classroom.

2. Tryout Attire

A) Athletes should come dressed prepared to workout. Girls should have hair pulled up or back.

B) Appropriate tennis/cheer shoes will be worn at all times. Sports bras are permitted.

C) All Jewelry should be removed, including nose, ear or belly rings.

3. Selection Process

A) Selection of cheerleaders is based upon the sole discretion of the coaches. Notification of acceptance to the team will be posted immediately following the last day of tryouts.

Do you offer scholarships or out of state tuition waivers?
UNC does Not provide cheerleading scholarships at this time.

Do I need an invitation to attend a tryout session?
No invitation is required.

Can I tryout for both Varsity and JV squads?
Yes, your selection to either team will be based on team needs and skill level presented at tryouts. Those selected to cheer on the JV team can be moved up to Varsity, and visa-versa, at any point during the season.

How does the team practice ?
The entire program practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9pm in Fetzer Gym C. Friday practices will be held on weekends of home football games from 4:30-6:00pm with the band. Varsity Athletes will also have manditory weight room sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Does the program compete at nationals?
Historically, both the cheerleaders and dance team have competed at UCA and NCA college nationals.

Is there a height and weight requirement?
No!! We do not maintain a height and weight requirement. We do require that all potential members maintain the appropriate physique in order to participate in the required movements.

Are tryout sessions open to the public?
No. Only members and potential members are allowed.

Do I need to have a physical completed by a physician?
Yes. Physicals must be completed in the UNC Sports Medicine office. Contact the head cheer or dance coach for the appropriate forms.

How many people tryout?
The number of individuals who tryout varys depending from year to year.
