The
team selected at the April tryout is our summer team that will
go to dance camp in August. Those who make the summer team are
required to re-tryout in September. September tryouts are open to any
UNC full time student. Tryout date is now posted above.
Tryouts
typically consist of "across the floor" to show technical elements,
pirouettes and fuettes in center, and a combination performed in small
groups. This combination will test your jazz, pom, and hip-hop styles
as well as some technique. It will also test your ability to learn
material quickly. Sometimes, those trying out are asked to come with a
30 second routine of their own with music. If this is required, it will
be announced closer to the tryout.
The
following is a list of technical elements that we look for in our
potential dancers:
Leaps
& Jumps:
toe touches, regular leaps, side leaps, switch leaps, switch side
leaps, barrel leaps, reverse leaps, surprise leaps
Turns:
at least 2 eight counts of straight leg fuettes ending with a double or
triple pirouette, triple pirouettes, possibly quadruple pirouettes
Flexibility:
high kicks, catch and hold turns, tilt kicks, ponches, illusions, fan
kicks
Pom
elements
Hip-hop
elements
Jazz
elements
Style
Team
members are required to maintain a good academic standing within the
university. They are also expected to keep an athletic personal
appearance at all times. At tryouts, we request that dancers wear form
fitting dance attire. Jazz pants, bikers, and capris are all
acceptable. Also half tops, sports bras, or other form fitting tops are
preferred. Please bring jazz shoes. Hair needs to be pulled back out of
the face; no excess make up is necessary.
Please email if
you have any questions. Someone from the coaching staff will
get back to you.
